Irfan Khan: Bollywood actor died of cancer in Mumbai |
Actor Irfan Khan, who acted in more than 100 Hollywood and Bollywood films, has died in Mumbai.
Irfan Khan, 53, was suffering from neuroendocrine cancer and returned to India last year after undergoing treatment in London.
The disease affects cells in the human body that release hormones into the bloodstream.
He was admitted to the intensive care unit at Kokilabin Hospital in Mumbai on Tuesday and his spokesman said in a statement that Irfan Khan had been brought to the hospital due to a colon infection.
However, Irfan Khan's family confirmed his death on Wednesday, saying in a statement: "I am convinced that I have lost." Actor Irfan Khan had said this touching thing in a note of his year 2018 when he was battling cancer and today we are giving the sad news that he is no longer with us.
The spokesman said: "Irfan was a strong-willed man who fought till the end. He always encouraged those who came near him. After being diagnosed with abnormal cancer in 2018, he faced the challenges ahead and managed his life. He has left his family he loved so much and gone to heaven. He received a lot of love from his family. They have left a legacy. We all pray for his soul to rest.
Irfan Khan's mother Saeeda Begum had also passed away in Jaipur, Rajasthan recently and he could not attend his mother's last rites due to a nationwide lockdown.
He reportedly attended his mother's funeral via video call.
In 2018, when Irfan Khan found out about his illness, he told his fans about it.
"Suddenly something happens in life that takes you further," he said in a Twitter message. The last few years of my life have been like this. I have a disease called neuroendocrine tumor but the love and strength of the people around me has given me hope.
Irfan Khan went to London for treatment as soon as he came to know about the disease and returned to India in March 2019 after staying there for almost a year.
After his return, Irfan Khan started working again and a few months ago his film 'English Medium' was also released which is a sequel to his successful film 'Hindi Medium'.
According to Indian media, Irfan's health often deteriorated during the shooting of the film. In such cases, the entire unit had to stop shooting several times and when Irfan felt better, the shot was taken.
Irfan Khan has acted in more than 100 Bollywood films in his career including successful films like Pico, Maqbool, Hasil, Hindi Medium, Lunch Box and Pan Sang Tomar.
Apart from Bollywood, he was also known in Hollywood and showed the essence of his acting in popular Hollywood films like 'Life of Pi', 'Slim Dog Millionaire' and 'The Amazing Spider-Man'.
On the demise of Irfan Khan, personalities belonging to the Indian film industry and other important personalities of the country have expressed their grief and remembered him in good words.
Actor Amitabh Bachchan, who worked with Irfan in the film Peacock, said in his Twitter message that Irfan Khan was an actor with immense talent who gave a lot to cinema. They left very quickly and left a big gap behind.
Sujit Sarkar, the director of 'Peco' and considered a close friend of Irfan Khan, said in his message, 'My friend Irfan. You fought and fought a lot. Majta will always be proud of you and we will meet again.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also expressed grief over the death of Irfan Khan, saying that his death is a great loss to the world of cinema and theater and he will be remembered for his versatile acting.
Political leader Rahul Gandhi said in his message that Irfan Khan was a versatile and skilled artist and was India's ambassador to the world of film and TV.
Irfan Khan was awarded the Padma Shri in 2011 for his services to the field of acting, while in 2013 he was awarded the National Film Award for Best Actor in Pan Singh Tomar. The movie 'Lunch Box' also won the award of public liking.
