Coronavirus: Blood plasma donated by recovering members of Tablighi Jamaat in India |
Dozens of Tablighi Jamaat members in India are coming forward to donate their blood plasma after recovering from the Corona epidemic.
The corona virus was confirmed in a large gathering of Tablighi Jamaat in Delhi, India. After which the activists of this party were also held responsible for spreading corona in many parts of the country.
Plasma therapy is being tested in Delhi and two other states in the country.
According to the World Health Organization, there is no cure or vaccine for corona virus. Corona virus vaccines are being researched in many countries around the world, including India.
The results of plasma therapy so far are very encouraging. Blood is being taken from members of Tablighi Jamaat in three hospitals in Delhi. These people have come out after being in quarantine for about a month.
Farooq Basa, from the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, is one of ten members of the Tablighi Jamaat who donated their blood plasma on Sunday.
He told the BBC he was happy to help the people of the country.
"The media has damaged our identity since Corona was diagnosed," he said. But thank God our move (to donate plasma) will help improve our identity.
Accused Tablighi Jamaat frequency
After the Delhi gathering, the Tablighi Jamaat and its members made headlines when they were accused of spreading corona in various parts of the country. The gathering took place during the second and third week of March at Nizamuddin, the headquarters of the Tablighi Jamaat in Delhi.
His headquarters have since been sealed off.
Many people, including about 250 foreigners, were stranded after the sudden announcement of a nationwide lockdown on March 24. More than a thousand members of the Tablighi Jamaat gathered there were confirmed to be infected with the corona virus and were subsequently sent to quarantine.
Police have registered a criminal case against party chief Muhammad Saad Kandhalvi . The Enforcement Directorate has also registered a case of money laundering against him. The family and Maulana Saad's supporters believe the allegations against him are "police delusion."
A section of the media called the members of the Tablighi Jamaat 'viruses' and 'corona virus spreaders'.
The hashtag 'Corona Jihadi' kept trending on Indian social media and many people started accusing the Tablighi Jamaat of deliberately spreading Corona.
People alleged that the members of the party went to the gathering and deliberately spread the infection among others. He was compared to a suicide bomber. For several days, the government provided daily updates on the corona infection, with separate information on corona spread by preachers. Since then, there have been reports of Muslims being harassed in most parts of the country.
The Tablighi Jamaat is a global organization with a presence in Western countries. It was established in 1926. The UAE has strongly objected to the attacks last week. Many influential people from Arab countries have raised questions about secularism in India on social media.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted a call for solidarity, saying the virus had no religion. Meanwhile, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday stressed the need for unity during a briefing on Corona.
Ahead of the news of the donation of plasma by members of the Tablighi Jamaat of India, he said during the briefing: When God created the world, He created only human beings. All human beings have two eyes and one body. Everyone's blood is red. God has not built a wall between humans.
On Sunday, Anas Saeed was the first person to go to the plasma at the request of Maulana. "The last few weeks have been difficult for us because everyone was blaming us for spreading corona," he said. Now our quarantine is over. Maulana has requested to donate plasma so we have decided to give it.
In other states, too, members of the party have come forward to donate blood plasma.
Last month, party member Barkat Khalil was diagnosed with the corona virus in Ahmedabad, along with eight members of his family. "Four of us are now fully recovered and we are going to donate plasma soon," he said.
But they are saddened by the way the people of the congregation have been treated. "Our society has become a victim of politics," he said.
Dr. Shoaib Ali also has a deep connection with the Tablighi Jamaat. He has been tasked with persuading party members in Delhi to donate plasma.
He told the BBC he did not need to try harder. "People who tested positive for corona last month and are now fully recovered are ready to donate plasma," he said. I am sure that 300 to 400 people will donate plasma in Delhi in the next few days.
Dr. Shoaib Ali says that the people of Jamaat are fulfilling their duties as citizens. He has refused to accept the move as damage control. "Even if the Tablighi Jamaat was not discredited last month, they would have come forward to donate plasmas because they are God-fearing and have been taught to sacrifice," he said.
Dr Shoaib Ali thinks that the process of donating plasma will take several days to complete as there is a lack of facilities in Delhi hospitals. He said that eight to ten people came to donate plasma on Sunday while 60 people donated their plasma on Monday and many others were on the list of plasma donors.
Delhi Chief Minister Kejriwal has said in a statement that Corona's patients are recovering from plasma therapy.
Plasma donation process and treatment
Dr. Tauseef Khan of Government Hospital, Lucknow is the first person in the country to donate plasma. He contracted the infection in March while treating an infected patient.
He says the patient he gave the plasma to is recovering.
"We only treat patients with coronary heart disease with plasma therapy," he said. In such patients, the body does not produce antibodies against the virus. It's because of diabetes or high blood pressure.
"It's an easy way," he explains of the plasma delivery process. Corona patients need to have corona negative twice. They are then sent to a 14-day quarantine. If they want to donate plasma, they will have to go to the hospital for an RTPCR test. If the result is negative, they can give plasma.
They say that blood contains 55% plasma and 90% water. It contains only 10% antibodies. Only healthy plasma is given to patients with corona.
"We extract 500 ml of plasma to save at least one patient," he says.
Plasma therapy in India is currently undergoing a trial phase in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and some other states. In many Indian states, the government is waiting for permission to start treatment with this therapy.
It is not yet clear how many patients have been treated with plasma taken from members of the Tablighi Jamaat. Doctors say the plasma can be kept at a temperature of minus 30 degrees Celsius for one year and at a temperature of minus 70 degrees Celsius for five years. It can be used in the event of an increase in the number of Corona patients in the future.
