In the UK, scientists will try to analyze DNA samples obtained
from five million volunteers to find out why the severity of the corona virus
varies among individuals.
The company, called UK Bio Bank, has received DNA samples from people as well as detailed information
about their health.
It is to be hoped that the genetic differences in humans may
explain why fully healthy individuals can become critically ill.
It is to be noted that the number of Covid-19 to 19 lakh 99
thousand 628 people has been affected so far in the world whereas one lakh 28
thousand 11 people have died from it. Worldwide, 5 million 996 people have
recovered from the disease.
15,000 scientists from around the world will have access to the
UK Biobank.
Some people do not have any symptoms of the corona virus, and
scientists are trying to find out what the proportion of such people is.
In some people the symptoms range from moderate to severe.
But in every one person, the symptoms of the disease are very
severe and between 1.5 percent and 1 percent of people die of the disease.
Blood, urine and saliva samples of more than five million
volunteers at the UK Bio Bank have been monitored over the past decade.
And this bank has helped us find answers to our questions about
diseases like cancer, stroke and dementia.
Now it will also include positive data from corona virus tests,
hospitals and doctors.
“We are trying to understand the differences between these
individuals by looking at the data available at the UK Biobank,” said Professor
Rory Collins, lead researcher on the project. What is the difference
between their genetics? Does the difference in their genes have anything
to do with their immune system? Does it affect their overall health? '
They said that this data set is very unique and they think it
can completely change our understanding of the disease.
